Cervical Disk Replacement Surgery (ADR)

Your cervical spine is made up of seven bones called cervical vertebrae that stack on top of one another to form the neck area. The cervical discs are the cushions located between the cervical vertebrae. They act as shock absorbers, allowing the neck to move freely.

The upper part of your spinal cord can also pass through a protective tunnel formed by your cervical spine. This section of your spinal cord contains the spinal nerves that provide sensation and movement to your upper body.

When the space between your vertebrae becomes too small, a portion of your vertebrae or your cervical disc may press on your spinal cord or spinal nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness. When these symptoms do not improve with nonsurgical treatment, disc surgery may be recommended.

Cervical disc replacement surgery involves the removal of a diseased cervical disc and its replacement with an artificial disc. Before this procedure became available, the affected disc was removed and the vertebrae above and below were fused together to prevent motion.

The use of an artificial disc to replace your natural cervical disc is a novel treatment that was recently approved by the FDA. Disc replacement surgery may have the advantage of allowing more movement while putting less strain on your remaining vertebrae than traditional cervical disc surgery.

Why is cervical disk replacement surgery needed?

Cervical disc degeneration, also known as wear and tear, is a common cause of space loss between the cervical vertebrae. Cervical discs begin to collapse and bulge with age; most people experience this by the age of 60. However, health care providers do not understand why some people experience more symptoms of cervical disc degeneration than others.

Symptoms for Cervical ADR:

  • Neck Pain
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headache
  • Pain that spreads down into your shoulders or arms
  • Weakness in your shoulders, arms, hands, and legs
  • Numbness or "pins and needles" sensations in your arms
