During lumbar fusion, a surgeon inserts bone or bone-like material into the space between two Lumbar bones. Metal plates, screws, or rods may hold the bones together. They can then fuse and heal as a single bone. Why it is done.

Lumbar fusion is a procedure that connects two or more bones in the spine to improve stability, correct a problem, or relieve pain. Lumbar fusion can be applied to:

Reshape the spine- Lumbar fusion can help to correct issues with the way the spine is formed. Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways.

Lumbar weakness or instability- Excessive motion between two Lumbar bones can make the spine unstable. This is a common side effect of severe arthritis in the spine. Lumbar fusion can help the spine become more stable.

A damaged disc- Lumbar fusion may be used to stabilise the spine after a damaged disc has been removed.

Risks

Lumbar fusions are generally safe. However, Lumbar fusion, like any other surgery, carries risks.

Potential complications include:

  • Infection.
  • Poor wound healing.
  • Bleeding.
  • Blood clots.
  • Damage to blood vessels or nerves in and around the spine.
  • Pain at the bone grafting site.
  • Symptoms appear to have returned.
